A monumental museum piece will be auctioned on April 3 auction of Antiques House. We emphasize on the intension of the House to resign from its commission if a government agency appears as a contender in the auction, as a minimum donation to our country, in order that this rare museum piece to remain in Greece.

These four volumes -41 cm wide by 51 cm height- of LUIGI CANINA, signed, consisting of a huge number of prints, etchings and engravings of the 19th century in perfect condition. Each individual volume or engravings, if added up, would cost many times more money. At the best of our knowledge, individual volumeshave been sold worldwide only by Christies, and never before as a whole edition. The comprehensive edition exists only in international museums and the Uffizi. The British Library Architecture has only the eighth, cheaper edition of the books. In three of them the number of the single copy is bound into a separate paper within the contents pages. The binding is exceptional work; the cover and back cover of each volume is 5 mm thick cardboard with a canvas lining, while the back is leather and reinforced. The paper of the internal pages is weighing 300 grams to 350 grams. and very durable.
The first volume, "L 'ARCHITETTURA EGIZIANA" includes Egypt, monuments from the Middle East, as well as Persian, Indian and Chinese architecture. The release dates can be found, written by the author himself, on the first page of each volume. The volumes contain lithographs of archaeological sites and monuments that are designed with detail, drawings of admirable precision and excellent, skilled design and a wealth of details. Stairways design is different from project to project. In addition, there are maps and topographical plans at 1:5000 scale with panoramic elevation view of the broader archaeological site and imprinted with the findings of the excavated area.
There are also blueprints of the actual initial plans of each buildings in scale 1:200 and 1:100, with imprints of the surviving parts of the building. CANINA designs do not include only plans of existing structures, but also goes far beyond designing the actual representations that he assumes could be drawned on them, suggesting a possible version of the form of the total volume of buildings. There are plans facades in the same range as most are these proposals and representation. Also plans of sections and construction details in characteristic points of buildings. In these designs, one can find out the methods used to resolve the problem of static efficiency of the building, and how the connection of individual components of the structure together (metal connectors, lead and iron castings etc) took place in the initial build up. Especially with regard to the details of the capitals, except the amazing detailed representation of the relief decoration, explores, reveals and reflects a geometric design, mathematical relationship that characterizes the ratios that determine the overall final form of architectural elements (helices, registered pentagons, golden sections , complex geometric structures etc).
In addition, deisgns include building three-dimensional perspective imaging of volumes, viewed from selected angles. The task today is even greater scientific significance, considering that CANINA reflects essentially the monuments, from 5 to 10 years before the final version which is published. So the author becomes an original eyewitness, the encounters and records of his are in a form much less distorted by the condition the monuments are found today, and what is even still exist as archeological findings in protected areas.
